Jakarta (Antara Bali) - An Indonesian social organization, Dompet Dhuafa, will be achieving an award from Ramon Magsaysay Foundation for its contribution to society and efforts to eradicate poverty in the country.

The President Director of Dompet Dhuafa Filantropi, Ahmad Juwaini, said here on Wednesday that the award is an appreciation on the part of the international world of the organizations work in serving people and helping the poor for the last 23 years.

Dompet Dhuafa is a nonprofit institution that works to lend dignity to the poor by collecting funds through alms, endowments and other lawful and legal means from individuals, groups and companies.

"We are grateful for this international acknowledgement, and humbled by the fact that what we have done for the people is being considered great," he said.

Ahmad explained that he was called by the committee on July 1, 2016, confirming that Dompet Dhuafa will be awarded at a ceremony in the end of August, 2016.

In addition to Dompet Dhuafa, other institutions and individuals to be awarded are Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (Japan), Bezwada Wilson (India), Conchita Carpio-Morales (the Philippines), Vientiane Rescue (Laos), dan Thodur Madabusi Krishna (India).

The Indonesian figures and organizations that had been awarded among others were HB Jasin, Mochtar Lubis, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Dita Indah Sari and Ahmad Syafii Maarif.

Ramon Magsaysay award was created in April 1957 by the trustees of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF) based in New York City, United States.

With the approval of the Philippines government, the award was created to commemorate Ramon Magsaysay, the late president of the Philippines, to disseminate the ideals of integrity in running the government.

Additionally, the award was created to commemorate Ramon Magsaysays persistence and his pragmatic idealism in providing public services.(WDY)
