Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian government presented its vision of the digital economy at the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) at the headquarters of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to the website of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, Indonesia was asked to present its vision and strategy in the face of the digital economic era at the WSIS forum in Geneva.

Acting Director General for Informatics Application of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Mariam Fatima Barata, presented Indonesia's best experience at the forum, under the theme, "Trade and Digital Economy."

"As an island country with a large population, Indonesia considers Information Technology and Communications (TIK) very important in supporting connectivity and in helping the government maximize its public services," Mariam said.

Indonesia has set itself the target of becoming the biggest digital economic country in Southeast Asia in 2020.

In realizing the vision, the Indonesian government has a number of strategies, including preparing a national e-commerce roadmap and provide ease of doing business facilities to e-commerce economic players.

The Indonesian government is also formulating a TIK policy, among others, regarding private data protection and strengthening broadband networks across the country.

Indonesia is also set to produce 1,000 technopreneurs until 2020, and expected to achieve a business valuation target of US$130 billion.

On the sidelines of the WSIS, the Indonesian delegation also held  bilateral meetings with a number of stakeholders who are Indonesian partners in  the TIK sector.  The bilateral meetings were held, among others, with Japan, UNESCO, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) and Geneva Internet Platform (GIP).

The WSIS forum was attended by various stakeholders in the TIK field from 140 countries. They discussed the contribution of TIK towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target. (WDY)
