Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (Antara Bali) -- The expedition team of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) 2015, which explored Area 8/Belu in East Nusa Tenggara, showcased the biodiversity and cultural potentials of the region.

The team held an exhibition in which it displayed the potentials of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) that have yet to be recognized by its people.

"We want to show that Nusa Tenggara has an abundance of biodiversity and cultural potentials," Jamaluddin, a member of the team, said here on Monday.

The expedition team comprised Indonesian army and police personnel as well as students.

They were divided into a team to research socio-cultural potentials, as well as flora and fauna, geology, forestry, and disaster risks, a team to explore mountains, forests, and coastal areas, and a team for community service.

"We discovered a variety of biodiversity, cultures, and other potentials since the expedition began, in districts such as Belu, North Timor Tengah, South Timor Tengah, Kupang, and Rote Island," he affirmed.

Deputy Commander of Expedition Team NKRI 2015 Major Uci Sanusi hoped that the exhibition introduced the potentials to the local community and that they preserve and manage them.

During the exhibition, which was held a week ago, the expedition team explained the potentials of the natural resources, biodiversity, and cultures on Timor Island.

The team also urged people to participate in preserving and maintaining the natural resource potentials.

Moreover, Major Sanusi noted that the flora and fauna team had discovered a species of turtle on Timor Island. However, these animals were hunted for their eggs and meat, while their shells were used to make bracelets and rings.

"This turtle species is one of the preserved animals. We hope people protect them to save them from extinction," Jamaluddin remarked. (WDY)
