Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said he is optimistic the country will have a surplus in rice production in 2015.

The minister in his press statement received here on Sunday also expressed optimism that the self sufficiency in rice would be sustainable.

He said in five months the government program for food self sufficiency has succeeded in encouraging farmers to boost food production.

He attributed the increase in food production to earlier planting, improvement in productivity, improvement of irrigation system and the use of modern farming tools and machines.

The minister said sustainable self sufficiency is the main strategy to guarantee food security.

He said he also set to reach self sufficiency ion corn production in three years although it would not be easy.

The minister cited hurdles including frequent conversion crops and fragmentation of farm lands, poor irrigation system, dwindling number farmers, considerable post harvest losses, shortage in supply of fertilizer and high yield variety of seed and instability of prices of farm products. (WDY)
