Cairo, Egypt (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian Embassy to Egypt in Cairo has denied claims that Egyptian security officers arrested Indonesian students during a security inspection.
"Until today, there are no reports regarding any Indonesian citizens being arrested," Nugroho Yuwono Aribhimo, the coordinator of Consular and Protocol Function of the embassy, informed Antara here on Sunday evening (March 29).
Nugroho stated that the security officers of the National Security Agency had inspected several Indonesian students. He added that the officers checked their passports and visa permits.
Additionally, President of the Indonesian Students Association of Egypt Agus Susanto remarked that the security officers conducted inspections on foreigners living in rented houses. The officers also checked the identification documents of foreigners in outdoor areas. "Two days ago, the security officers had inspected houses rented by students. There was even an inspection conducted by possible conmen posing as security officers," Agus pointed out.
Agus believes that the thieves were disguised as police officers and had inspected the rooms. "The students suspect that fake security officers were involved as following the inspection, they found that some of their items, including wallets, had gone missing," Agus revealed.
The Egyptian News Agency MENA reported that the security officers are intensifying inspections on foreigners in a bid to stamp out terrorists.
Previously, the Indonesian Embassy had appealed to their citizens in Egypt to always carry along their passports or valid student identity cards. (WDY)
