Denpasar (Antara Bali) - The West Denpasar subdistrict administration promises to pay Rp100,000 to anyone who spots and catches another person throwing or spilling garbage at random, a spokesman said.
"We have adopted this policy to teach the public to care for cleanliness in their neighborhoods," West Denpasar Subdistrict chief I Made Mudra said here Friday.
Speaking to reporters while leading a cleaning up operation against illegal garbage dumps, he said firm actions would be taken against people who knowingly or unknowingly littered residential areas.
The aim was to make Denpasar free from illegal garbage dumps by the end of 2010.
"We will personally supervise cleaning up operations and patrol the main streets. This is a real action to motivate people to create a clean and green Denpasar," he said.
Illegal garbage disposal sites were cleaned up and then sealed with bamboo, Mudra said, adding that he had ordered village chiefs in is jurisdiction to watch over the closed sites.
"Garbage handling is not merely the responsibility of the administration, but also of the public in general. Therefore, I want to motivate the public by promising a reward for those who spot and catch people littering in the area," he said.
The member of D commission of the Denpasar Regional Legislative Assembly, IB Kompyang Wiranata said the cleaning-up action was a representation of public concern and should be conducted frequently.
"I am certain that the public will be more aware if we keep doing the cleaning-up action," he said.
Made Sutarka, the chief of Padangsambilan Kelod village, said he conducted cleaning-up operations in his neighborhood frequently and suggested that other village chiefs familiarize people in their respective villages with the anti-garbage program.(*)
