Jakarta (Antara Bali) - If the problem the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is facing continues to remain unresolved, forming an ethics committee could be a good solution, according to a legislator.

"The KPK can set up an ethics committee to carry out its tasks and supervise agencies better," member of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), Yayat Biaro, said during a discussion here on Saturday.

He made the statement in the wake of KPK Deputy Chairman Bambang Widjojanto's arrest by the National Police on Friday (January 23).

Biaro added that leaders of the KPK can set up the committee and elect members from within or outside the agency.

"Leaders of the KPK can form an ethics committee in accordance with the law and assign the committee members," the lawmaker stated.

However, if Widjojanto has already been named as a suspect in a case, the anti-graft body should suspend him post haste.

"If he has already been named as a suspect, there is no need to form an ethics committee. He should directly be declared non-active from the KPK," Biaro argued.

The Crime Investigation Department (Bareskrim) of the National Police Headquarters arrested Widjojanto on Friday.

According to Head of the National Police's Public Relations Division Inspector General Ronny F. Sompie, his arrest did not require the involvement of any force.

"The arrest was done humanely. He (Widjojanto) did not resist arrest. No inhuman action was taken. He is a state official, after all," Sompie remarked.

Widjojanto was arrested for allegedly prompting witnesses to give false testimony at a session of the Constitutional Court related to a dispute over the election of the head of Kotawaringin district, Central Kalimantan, in July 2010.

A case against the senior KPK official was made based on a report (number: LP/67/I/2015/Bareskrim, dated January 15, 2015) by Sugianto Sabran, who is a Commission III member and part of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle faction of the DPR.

Earlier, the anti-graft body had named Commissioner General Budi Gunawan, who was named a candidate for the post of the national police chief, as a suspect.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had nominated Gunawan as the sole candidate for the position.

However, just a few days after the announcement was made, the KPK named Gunawan as a graft suspect in connection with certain rewards he allegedly received through suspicious transactions. (WDY)
