Nusa Dua (Antara Bali) - A number of countries participating in the Asia Conference on Oceans, Food Security and Blue Growth (ACOFB) agreed to assure a healthier sea in the continent by 2030.

"A healthy sea in a simple term means a sea with lower pollution," the director general of processing and marketing of fisheries products of the ministry of marine resources and fisheries, Saut P Hutagalung, said after the closing of the event here on Thursday.

The idea emerged in view of the important role of the sea in meeting food needs, he said.

Waters in the continent play a very important role in fish production with almost 90 percent of fishery products processed into foods coming from Asia, he said.

"Fifty percent of fish catch also comes from Asia," he added.

He said the people meanwhile are also expected to play a role and to be more resilient in dealing with climate change that could threaten food supplies. (IGT)
