Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika will cancel an agreement with PT Navigat Organic Energy Indonesia (NOEI) about waste management in the Suwung landfill because the agreement was detrimental to the local government.
"The provincial government will take it over, whatever the risks it may cause," he said in a Simakrama show (monthly dialogue) program with the governor, in Wantilan Parliament here on Saturday.
The statement was conveyed to answer a question from Udayana University's academician Putu Preantjaya Winaya who had spotlighted the slow waste management in the Suwung landfill, Denpasar, causing the garbage to pile up high.
Pastika admitted that the provincial government of Bali is not involved in the agreement with PT NOEI because the cooperation is signed with four regencies in Bali, these are Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan.
"But in reality, PT NOEI is unable to fulfill terms decided in the agreement to process waste and generate electricity. The agreement would cost us more," he said.
He said, the garbage piles at the landfill even reached up to over 25 meters, the smoke from burning trash and the smell really disturbed residents, while liquid waste from the landfill has been flowing into the sea.
"Actually, there are a lot of investors who are interested to manage waste, but a deal has to be re-negotiated because we are still bound to cooperate with PT NOEI," he said.
Meanwhile, Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra admitted they could not do much to overcome the problem of waste in the landfill because it actually involves four management areas.
"We apologize to the public if the garbage trucks are late, it's because of problems at the landfill as well. Fleet frequently overturned because there were no roads," he said. (*/T007)
