Pekanbaru (Antara Bali) - The international environmental organization World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) reported the deaths of three Sumatran tigers during 2012, which were allegedly killed by Riau residents.
"The number of tiger deaths is likely to decrease, compared to previous years. However, there has not been disclosure of the causes of death," Head of Public Relations of WWF in Riau, Syamsidar, said here on Saturday.
He also said the average number of Sumatran tiger deaths in the last three years has been three cases per year.
"Five years ago, tiger deaths reached five cases per year, but it has recently decreased. Now, the only problems are revealing the causes of death and providing legal penalties for the killers," he stated.
Syamsidar noted that the last case of the killing of a Sumatran tiger was in June 2012 in Limau Kapas sub-district, Rokan Hilir district, Riau province, in which the protected animal was allegedly killed by local residents.(IGT)
