Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's House Speaker, Marzuki Alie, said that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has every right to question Vice President Boediono on the extension of the short-term bailout fund facility (FPJP) to Bank Century.
"Please question him. Pak (Mr) Boediono said that he is ready to assist the KPK. But why should we make a fuss and tarnish his image? He is a good person," Marzuki said.
KPK's Chairman, Abraham Samad, said that Boediono, in his capacity as the governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), has a role in the disbursement of the bailout to Bank Century.
"KPK should know if Boediono has been directly involved. It is not certain that a person in the highest position is guilty," the House Speaker said.
He said that it is not certain that Boediono abused his authority because it could be that he signed the instruction letter for the disbursement of the funds as part of his administrative responsibility.
"For example, as the House Speaker, I sign all the letters addressed to the president but the decision is not in my hand. All the decisions are made by my subordinates. Then, can I be prosecuted legally? Of course not," he said.
According to Marzuki, the same thing applies to Boediono, where data on Bank Century had been concluded by his subordinates.
"There is no guarantee that Boediono understood the real thing because data that reached him had been processed. Are the people who signed the letters guilty? It is not certain. Administrative mistakes are possible. There is also legal responsibility which belongs to the perpetrator behind the case," Marzuki Alie said.
Boediono was the governor of Bank Indonesia between May 2008 and May 2009 when the bailout amounting to Rp6.7 trillion was disbursed to Bank Century (Bank Mutiara). (*/T007)
