Pagaralam (Antara Bali) - Five sub district areas in Kota Pagaralam, South Sumatra, have been hit by long drought causing problem in irrigation and clean water supply for households.
"People in five sub districts - Dempo Selatan, Dempo Utara, Dempo Tengah, Pagaralam Utara and Pagaralam Selatan - are in difficulty to secure water not only for drinking but also for irrigation of hundreds of hectares of rice fields," Hery Mulyono, the secretary of the regional Natural Disaster Control Agency said here Tuesday.
Water is not easily available for household consumption and farm irrigation over the past month. Hundreds of hectares of rice fields have been left idle in Pagaralam because of irrigation problem .
Wells as the sources of clean water were dry forcing the local people to use water from rivers kilometers away for household consumption. The hardest hit areas are Dempo Selatan, Dempo Utara and Dempo Tengah, Hery said.
"Villages badly hit by the drought include Mingkik, Bandar, and Talangkubangan in the Kecamatan of Dempo Selatan and Sumber Jaya, Rimbacandi in Kecamatan of Dempo Tengah and Kerinjing, Bumiagung and Janang in Kecamatan of Dempo Utara, he said.(*/T007)
