Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Bali's exports of 1.11 million pcs of  rattan handicraft products reached  4.17 million US dollars in  12011, a  22.02 pct drop from 5.35 million US dollars in 2010.

"But their volume increased 43.74 pct, because in 2010 the exports reached only 777,295 pcs of rattan handicraft products," head of the Bali provincial government public relations division I Ketut Teneng said in Denpasar on Thursday.

He said actually Bali has no rattan producing plantations or forests, but the raw materials for making various kinds of commodities including souvenirs had been supplied from Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Papua.

Bali's handicraft producers and artists produce rattan into interesting chairs, upboards, household utensils and beds, keenly interested by foreign consumers.

The raw materials are also produced into many kinds of souvenirs so that  the shipment of rattan basic materials became important in boosting Bali's non-oil/gas export earnings.(IGT)
