Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The government has proposed providing Rp25.6 trillion to assist the poor due to the imminent increase in the price of subsidized fuel oils.
An estimated 18.5 million families across the country will be entitled to receive a monthly cash handout of Rp150,000 each during the upcoming nine months, according to a draft of the revised 2012 state budget, a copy of which was made available to Antara on Wednesday night.
The documents said the plan to increase fuel oil prices will have the potential to raise food prices and lower the purchasing power and living standard of the nation¿s poor.
Further, the plan to cut fuel subsidies might boost the country's inflation rate to 7 percent, increasing the poverty rate, and depriving poor students from continuing their studies.
Under the cash payment scheme, the assistance is to be used according to the recipients' needs and distributed as soon as possible, without causing market price distortions.(IGT)
