Kupang (Antara Bali) - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Frans Lebu Raya hailed the culture and tourism ministry's decision to withdraw Komodo National Park from the New7Wonders of Nature (N7WN) competition.

"Indonesia's decision to withdraw Komodo as a finalist in the New7Wonders of Nature competition is very positive because it will make people wonder," the governor said here on Tuesday.

When the N7WN organizer had decided to remove Komodo from the contestants' list, the East Nusa Tenggara authorities and people were in fact happy because it would make people all over the world, curious,  Frans Lebu said.

"I am saying that if Komodo is removed, people will wonder and many more will come to NTT to see the giant lizard," he said, adding that therefore the decision must not be regretted.

Apart from the Komodo dragon, NTT has some other tourist attractions such as the three-color Lake Kelimutu in Ende, Maumere Bay marine park and another marine park on Kepa Isle in Alor District, which are considered the best in the world.

Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik  announced the decision to withdraw Komodo from N7WN on  Monday (Aug. 15, 2011).

"The decision was taken because the organizer, the New 7 Wonders (N7W) Foundation, has been unprofessional, inconsistent, not transparent and lacking accountable credibility," he said.

Although the Komodo National Park (TNK) had resigned from campaigning to be selected as one of the world's seven wonders by the N7W the TNK would remain the world's heritage recognized by UNESCO in 1991, the minister said.

"The world community would remain recognizing the Komodo as 'the one and only real dragon in the world' and the fact is replaceable. In view of that we remain committed to developing and promoting TNK as a conservation area and international tourist destination in Indonesia. Through the "Komodo the Real Wonder of the World" brand would promote TNK across the world," Jero Wacik said.(*)
