Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia will take over the chairmanship of the countries of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Australia (MIKTA) from Turkey, a statement on the Foreign Affairs Ministry's official Twitter account noted here, Wednesday.

According to the statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno L. P. Marsudi will attend the MIKTA Ministerial Meeting in Istanbul on Wednesday evening to take over the leadership from Turkey to chair the MIKTA for 2018.

Earlier in the day, Marsudi had met her Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss preparations for the MIKTA Ministerial Meeting.

Established in 2013 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, MIKTA is a partnership that brings together Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Australia to address various strategic global and regional issues.

MIKTA is an informal partnership that is led by a foreign minister to support an effective global government.

The five MIKTA member states are also the members of the G20 economic group, with relatively similar gross domestic product and the objective of ensuring a global governance system that is beneficial to all countries.

In September 2016 in New York, the MIKTA foreign ministers had affirmed their commitment to addressing the growing challenge of humanitarian crises across the world.

Humanitarian crises are increasingly complex and protracted, with 65 million people fleeing their homes owing to violence and disasters.

It is vital that the world finds ways to ensure that the needs and rights of its displaced people are met, including through assisting refugee hosting countries.

To this end, the MIKTA foreign ministers had reached an agreement at the 7th MIKTA Foreign Ministerial Meeting, held on the occasion of the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York, at the time. (WDY)
