Indonesia To Host Asia Pacific Urban Forum In October 2015

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia will host the Asia Pacific Urban Forum (APUF) and the High-Level Regional Meeting of Asia-Pacific for the habitat that is expected to build a new global urban agenda.

"This conference is expected to result a global consensus about the New Urban Agenda," Director General of Cipta Karya of Public Works and Housing Ministry Andreas Suhono said here Tuesday.

He explained that APUF, with the theme of Sustainable Urban Development in Asia, and the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting will take place in Jakarta on the October 19-22nd, 2015.

According to him the New Urban Agenda is a deal to address the challenges and opportunities behind urbanization to achieve sustainable development, and the implementation of urban and housing policies that affect the future of the city.

APUF is a means for the Asia-Pacific countries to share experiences and best practices in supporting the sustainable urbanization, Suhono said.

People living in rural areas are encouraged to be able to utilize and empower the opportunities in their villages rather than doing urbanization without a clear plan and expertise to try their fortune in the city.

"I urge the rural community to further maximize the potential of the village and develop the rural economy," Minister of Rural, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Marwan Jafar said recently.

According to the minister, the economic potential in rural areas is not inferior to the urban economy, especially after the government implemented  a policy that gives authority to the village to develop the economic potential of each using rural fund.

The villagers should be able to take advantage of the opportunities for economic welfare by developing economy creative potentials and so forth.

The potentials which can be developed by the rural communities using the rural funds, among others, is to make village-owned enterprises or, for example, developing tourist villages.

When the economy in the villages has been arranged, Jafar believed that the circulation of money and investment would be spread to all regions and villages so as to create jobs evenly.

"Finally the flow of money velocity is not only centered on one point, but distributed well," Jafar said. (WDY)
