World Record Of Angklung Musical Play Made In Bandung

Bandung, W Java (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian Record Museum Thursday declared a world record in "angklung" musical performances at the Harmony Angklung event in which 20,000 people played at the Siliwangi stadium here on Thursday.

"The Indonesian Record Museum noted that the largest angklung performances featuring 20 thousand citizens of Bandung playing constituted a world record. The previous record of angklung playing in Jakarta featured only 11 thousand citizens," Vice Director of Indonesian Record Museum (MURI), Oscar Semesta Susilo, said.

Angklung is a musical instrument made of two to four bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are carved to produce a resonant pitch when struck and are tuned to octaves. The base of the frame is held in one hand, while the other hand strikes the instrument. This causes a repeating note to sound.

"The Harmony Angklung For The World 20,000 People" is a series of events held by Bandung city to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first Asian-African Conference (AAC).

A number of songs were performed at the event, including, We Are The World, Halo-Halo Bandung and Padamu Negeri.

The Muri's record of the angklung performances was awarded to the Bandung Mayor M Ridwan Kamil and witnessed by representatives of Guinness World Records Lucya. Meanwhile, West Java's governor, Ahmad Heryawan, expressed his pride over the award conferred by Muri. (WDY)
