Malaysian Sentenced To 13.5 Years For Smuggling Methamphetamine

Denpasar (Antara Bali) - A Malaysian national, Gobinathan V Loganathan (26), received 13.5 years of imprisonment after being found guilty of smuggling 956.66 grams of methamphetamine.

The Denpasar district court in Bali in its ruling on Thursday also fined the defendant Rp1 billion or three months in prison for failing to meet it.

The sentence was lighter than 14 years a fine of Rp1 billion or six months more in prison demanded by prosecutor Ni Made Neotroni Lumisensi.

The judges led by Puji Harian concluded the defendant had been proven guilty violating Articles 112 and 113 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics namely illegally importing and possessing non-plant narcotics.

The defendant and his lawyer after hearing the verdict said they would take time to consider whether or not they would appeal it.

Gobin was caught by customs officers at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport on November 1, 2010.

The defendant who worked as a security at a night club in Malaysia was caught upon arrival from Malaysia on a transit before leaving for Jakarta aboard Air Asia AK 366.

Customs officers examined Gobin thoroughly upon suspicion of his movements. Later they discovered the stuff kept inside the side section of his bag.(*)
