Singapore Praises Indonesian Navy for Securing Malacca Strait

Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (Antara Bali) - The Singapore government has praised the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), particularly the Western Fleet Quick Response (WFQR) team of the Naval Base IV, for securing the Malacca Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

"The Singapore government has declared the Malacca Strait zero-crime area until March 2017," Commander of the Naval Base IV Commodore S Irawan stated on Saturday.

The Indonesian Navy will always secure the Malacca Strait, he noted, adding that the navy had arrested a total of 78 people for their part in various crimes in the strait.

"With regard to the instruction from the commander of the Western Indonesian Fleet Command, we have secured the Malacca Strait, and the smuggling activities in border areas have been dealt with seriously," he remarked.
Since 2016, the Indonesian Navy has seized hundreds of vessels. Currently, 23 vessels are impounded at Yos Sudarso pier in Riau islands province, he added.

"Hundreds of people have been arrested," he pointed out.

He further praised several sides, including journalists, who have supported the TNI AL's performance.

"The information from journalists are very useful for us and the community," he stated. (WDY)
