Govt To Revitalize 4,000 Traditional Markets Until 2018

Jember, E Java (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian government has set itself the target of revitalizing 4,000 traditional markets across the country until 2018, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said.

"Since 2015 we have targeted to revitalize 1,000 traditional markets each year so 4,000 traditional markets will hopefully be revitalized by 2018," he said here on Thursday.

In the past two years, 216 out of the targeted 2,000 traditional markets have not been revitalized. Hopefully, all of the 216 markets could be revitalized by 2018, he said.

"The government is obliged to improve people's markets such as Tanjung Market in Jember. We will discuss the technical implementation (of the project) with the Jember district head," he said.

The government is determined to revitalize and build 1,000 traditional markets this year. The revitalization and construction of the markets will cost an estimated Rp3.7 trillion.

"The funds needed to revitalize and build the markets may come from co-administration task fund and special allocation funds which will be adjusted to the existing budget," he said.

While in Jember, the trade minister also inspected the Tanjung Market which will receive an injection of revitalization fund.

He also held a dialog with several traders to ask about the prices of several basic commodities. (WDY)
